Francis Clarke has been farming at Tarago NSW since 1969 – prime lambs and beef. Over this time he also planted and agroforest in conjunction with CSIRO, developed a world first cloning system with elite radiata pine to produce superior commercial planting stock and run a sawmilling and harvesting operation.
In 2023 he looked into installing a battery to augment his solar system. To his surprise he found that a large battery in an EV was cheaper per kilowatt hour than a small stationary battery – you got the wheels for free! So, he bought a Nissan Leaf, installed a bidirectional charger and joined Amber Electric to manage his power usage. Since then he has not paid a power bill, has run his EV (2,600km/month) and currently has a $217 credit on his account. He says he looks forward to when one or more of the old coal burners is in unplanned maintenance and he can sell power back to the grid at $20/kWh rather than the normal 20c wholesale price.
